On your own

If you accidentally booked your flight according to last year's schedule, you don't have to park yourself in our office. Other parks abound.

For a short hike, you can visit the adjacent Salk Insititue and walk down to Black's Beach (far more interesting in the summer), or drive up to the Torrey Pines State Park (4 miles north). In the evening you can stroll in downtown La Jolla (2 miles south), the Gaslamp district (12 miles south), or Old Town (9 miles south).

If you have a day to spare and enjoy paid attractions, the San Diego Zoo (11 miles south) and its adjacent Balboa Park, Sea World (7 miles south), and the Wild Animal Park (20 miles north), will keep you busy.

For a long day, or longer, you can drive to Joshua Tree State Park (2 hours away), or, if you feel adventurous, Mexico (half an hour each way plus a year to cross the border back), and if there's a lot of cash you need to earn, or burn, Las Vegas (5 hours if speed limits don't bother you).

If sports are on your mind, you can use the university's extensive sport facilities ($10 per day except Wednesday when we foot the bill), or go hang-gliding, or, if Golf is more your speed, book a tee time at the world famous Torrey Pines Golf Club, right next to UCSD.
